SUMMARY:Translation of Russian Poetry – A Beginner’s Journey with Claire Muraoka and Oksana Kobzarenko
DESCRIPTION:Many experienced translators of Russian poetry have written about the principles of translation as well as publishing their works. Although we will share some of their guidance\, this workshop makes no attempt to match their level of expertise. Instead\, we will share our journey as novices and show how translation has enhanced our enjoyment of poetry and increased our understanding of the Russian language. \nThe workshop will include a brief discussion of three published translations of a poem by Anna Akhmatova\, but the bulk of the session will focus on a discussion of our own translation of two poems about autumn – our favourite season in Russia – by Fyodor Tyutchev and Nikolay Zabolotsky. \nThe objectives of the workshop are shown below but we welcome questions and discussion\, so will be happy for other topics to be covered as time allows. Above all\, we hope to share the enormous enjoyment our translation experience has brought us. \nObjectives \n\nReview of translation principles – different approaches\nReview differences in three published translations of Anna Akhmatova “Song of Last Meeting”\nReview of two translations and choices we made\n\n“There is an early Autumn” by Fyodor Tyutchev\n“Autumn” by Nikolay Zabolotsky\n\n\nWhat we learned through translation experience\nBenefits of translation\nResources available

SUMMARY:Russian Book Club: Master and Margarita by Bulgakov
DESCRIPTION:Our book club is for anyone who is interested in Russian literature but is daunted by the prospect of reading a complete work in the original! Feel free to join the session on the 3rd May or 11th May – whichever suits you. \nEach month we select a classic or contemporary Russian literary work to read in translation. While our discussions are held in English\, we incorporate excerpts and quotes in Russian into the sessions to provide an authentic experience. The club is hosted by an experienced teacher\, who will tailor the language element to the levels of the participants. So whether you’re an elementary or advanced learner of Russian\, our book club welcomes all levels of proficiency. \n‘The Master and Margarita’ is a mystery novel\, a book that transcends its time\, that makes you come back to it again and again. Three threads of the novel are woven into a single whole: Soviet Moscow\, ancient Jerusalem and eternal love. Philosophical depth is combined with a fascinating plot\, an ironic view of things with faith in eternal values\, without which it is impossible to imagine human life. The whole history of the human race with its constant vices and virtues appears on the pages of one of the main masterpieces of world literature of the XX century. \nWe recommend reading Michael Glenny’s translation The Master and Margarita: Mikhail Bulgakov (Everyman’s Library CLASSICS): Amazon.co.uk: Bulgakov\, Mikhail\, Franklin\, Simon\, Glenny\, Michael: 9781857150667: Books or the one by R.Pevear and L.Volokhonsky The Master And Margarita: Mikhail Bulgakov : Bulgakov\, Mikhail\, Volokhonsky\, Larissa\, Pevear\, Richard: Amazon.co.uk: Books

SUMMARY:Russian Film Club: Uncle Vanya
DESCRIPTION:Dive deeper into the captivating world of Russian cinema through a curated selection of award-winning contemporary and classic films spanning various genres. \nAt our monthly gatherings\, you can look forward to engaging discussions that delve into the nuances of each film\, offering perspectives on storytelling techniques\, cinematography\, and the socio-cultural context in which the movies were created. By announcing the film a month in advance\, we aim to give you ample time to watch\, reflect\, and come prepared to share your thoughts and insights with fellow cinephiles. \nLanguage will not be a barrier at the Russian Film Club\, as all our sessions are conducted in English\, welcoming film enthusiasts from diverse backgrounds to come together and explore the beauty and depth of Russian cinema. Whether you’re a seasoned film buff or just discovering the magic of Russian movies\, our club provides a welcoming space to expand your horizons and appreciation for cinematic artistry. \nAlong with Henrik Ibsen and August Strindberg\, Chekhov is often named as one the main figures of early modernism in the theatre.  In his Uncle Vanya despite the deceptively simple plot\, he managed to bring up all the eternal questions of life. \nAndrei Konchalovsky as a director sought to get as close to the text of the original as possible\, preserving the special Chekhovian atmosphere.  Konchalovsky together with his amazing cameraman adds volume to the themes raised in the drama and the play resonates as loudly as ever. \nYou can watch the film here with a subscription Uncle Vanya (Дядя Ваня) 1970 in English Online \nOr for free here https://youtu.be/0V2EZqQy99I   (English subtitles here are not always accurate) \nYou can read “Дядя Ваня” in Russian here https://anylang.net/en/books/ru/uncle-vanya/read\, (and if you click on an unknown word\, the translation should pop up)\, or here (in English) https://www.gutenberg.org/files/1756/1756-h/1756-h.htm \nWe recommend the translations by either Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky or Annie Baker or Paul Schmidt. \n

SUMMARY:Russian Book Club: Eugene Onegin by Pushkin
DESCRIPTION:Our book club is for anyone who is interested in Russian literature but is daunted by the prospect of reading a complete work in the original! \nOn 2 April 1833\, one of the best works of Russian literature – Pushkin’s novel in verse ‘Eugene Onegin’ – was published. This event was a sensation among the public\, 5 thousand copies were sold out in one week. ‘Eugene Onegin’ was met enthusiastically as it became an ‘an encyclopaedia of Russian life’. Indeed\, the novel\, despite the main romantic love line\, contains a great deal of everyday details: we learn how people in Russia dressed in the 1820s\, what they were interested in\, what was in fashion\, etc. ‘Eugene Onegin’ was also a new word in poetry. The novel is written in a special ‘Onegin stanza’\, which gives the work a peculiar\, almost conversational lightness. It’s ironic\, light-hearted tone combined with a dramatic love line create that unique poetic atmosphere that is as much to the reader’s liking today as it was 180 years ago. The eternal themes of conscience\, love\, betrayal\, loyalty\, infidelity\, a person’s calling\, sound as relevant as ever. \nWe recommend reading an excellent new translation of “Евгений Онегин”  by Mary Hobson or  by James E. Falen. Also\, it would helpful if you get Nabokov’s translation as well which is more of a word-to-word translation and is a good reader’s companion.

SUMMARY:Russian through film: «На Дерибасовской хорошая погода\, ...»
DESCRIPTION:A fantastic short course for advanced students\, based on an authentic Russian film: these two sessions are focussed on the 1992 film На Дерибасовской хорошая погода\, или На Брайтон-Бич опять идут дожди. It’s an unusual Russian-American comedy\, and the last film directed by Leonid Gaiday. It captured the atmosphere of a time when cooperation between Russia and the West seemed not just possible\, but inevitable. The film is full of references to real events and people of the early 1990s and earlier. \nThe first lesson will look at excerpts from the film\, examine the background and context\, and introduce key themes and vocabulary. \nDuring the week between lessons\, your task will be to watch the film. The second lesson will then give you the chance to discuss what you’ve seen and test how well you have understood it. \nYou’ll learn new vocabulary\, practise your listening comprehension\, improve your discussion and analysis skills – and you’ll pick up a wealth of fascinating historical and cultural information. \n-Suitable for anyone interested in improving their listening skills and learning more about Russian history and culture. If you’ve ever wondered whether you’re really ready to watch a film in the original Russian\, now is the time to find out!
