SUMMARY:Russian Book Club: Little Tragedies by Pushkin
DESCRIPTION:Our book club is for anyone who is interested in Russian literature but is daunted by the prospect of reading a complete work in the original! \nEach month we select a classic or contemporary Russian literary work to read in translation. While our discussions are held in English\, we incorporate excerpts and quotes in Russian into the sessions to provide an authentic experience. The club is hosted by an experienced teacher\, who will tailor the language element to the levels of the participants. So whether you’re an elementary or advanced learner of Russian\, our book club welcomes all levels of proficiency. \nAlexander Pushkin is considered to be the father and an indisputable genius of Russian literature. Little tragedies is the name of the collection of Pushkin’s four dramas in verse: The Miserly Knight\, Mozart and Salieri\, The Stone Guest and A feast During the Plague. They all bring up eternal questions of the complexity of human nature\,  ambiguity and the duality of good and evil. \nWe recommend reading Pushkin in the translation by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky: Boris Godunov\, Little Tragedies\, and Others: The Complete Plays (Vintage Classics): Amazon.co.uk: Pushkin\, Alexander: 9780593467565: Books \nThere is a great commentary and another translation which you can read here \nhttps://www.arvindguptatoys.com/arvindgupta/rus-pushkin-3tragedies.pdf \nWe also recommend watching the Little tragedies \nPart 1 \nhttps://youtu.be/1Ke33_1de_Y?si=-D05IYQcCTbd2lJn \nPart 2 \nhttps://m.youtube.com/watch?v=sJcrStM2U3c \nYou can read it in Russian here \nА. SUMMARY:Russian through film: «На Дерибасовской хорошая погода\, ...»
DESCRIPTION:A fantastic short course for advanced students\, based on an authentic Russian film: these two sessions are focussed on the 1992 film На Дерибасовской хорошая погода\, или На Брайтон-Бич опять идут дожди. It’s an unusual Russian-American comedy\, and the last film directed by Leonid Gaiday. It captured the atmosphere of a time when cooperation between Russia and the West seemed not just possible\, but inevitable. The film is full of references to real events and people of the early 1990s and earlier. \nThe first lesson will look at excerpts from the film\, examine the background and context\, and introduce key themes and vocabulary. \nDuring the week between lessons\, your task will be to watch the film. The second lesson will then give you the chance to discuss what you’ve seen and test how well you have understood it. \nYou’ll learn new vocabulary\, practise your listening comprehension\, improve your discussion and analysis skills – and you’ll pick up a wealth of fascinating historical and cultural information. \n-Suitable for anyone interested in improving their listening skills and learning more about Russian history and culture. If you’ve ever wondered whether you’re really ready to watch a film in the original Russian\, now is the time to find out!

SUMMARY:Russian Book Club: Ivan Bunin. Three short stories
DESCRIPTION:Our long-awaited book club is for anyone who is interested in Russian literature but is daunted by the prospect of reading a complete work in the original! \nFor this session we will be reading three short stories: The gentleman from San-Franscisco(1915) Dark avenues(1943). Cold Autumn(1944). \n“My writing always emerges from within. It must spring forth from my own thoughts and feelings\, and without that inner spark\, I find it impossible to write.” Ivan Bunin\, Nobel Prize laureate \n“The Gentleman from San Francisco” is undoubtedly Ivan Bunin’s most famous story\, recognized as a masterpiece. However\, his other tales and novellas deserve attention as well. By exploring these three short stories\, you’ll understand why many of Bunin’s contemporaries considered him a worthy successor to Tolstoy and Chekhov\, and why The Nobel Prize in Literature 1933 was awarded to Ivan Alekseyevich Bunin “for the strict artistry with which he has carried on the classical Russian traditions in prose writing”. \nYou can find the short stories here: \n“The Gentleman from San Francisco”  (Господин из Сан-Франциско)  \nIn English: \nThe Gentleman from San Francisco\, by I. SUMMARY:Russian Book Club: “The Brothers Karamazov” by Dostoevsky
DESCRIPTION:Our long-awaited book club is for anyone who is interested in Russian literature but is daunted by the prospect of reading a complete work in the original! \nSet in 19th-century Russia\, The Brothers Karamazov is a thought-provoking novel that delves into profound philosophical questions. It explores the concepts of God\, free will\, and morality. The novel is also considered a theological drama\, examining the struggles of faith and doubt. Its central plot revolves around a gripping subject of patricide and investigation. \nWe recommend a classic translation by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky or a new one by Michael Katz. \nThere is also a film\, which is very faithful to the book\, directed by Ivan Pyriev in 1968\, which we recommend to watch (Братья Карамазовы\, 1 серия (4К\, драма\, реж. Иван Пырьев\, 1968 г.) – YouTube) \nWe look forward to reading\, discussing and sharing our passion for Russian literature with you!

SUMMARY:Russian Book Club: “The Heart of a Dog” by Mikhail Bulgakov
DESCRIPTION:Our long-awaited book club is for anyone who is interested in Russian literature but is daunted by the prospect of reading a complete work in the original! \n“The Heart of a Dog” is a masterful blend of dark humour\, philosophical inquiry\, and social commentary. Bulgakov’s vivid and often grotesque imagery\, combined with his sharp wit\, makes this short novel a compelling and thought-provoking read. It remains a significant work in the realm of Russian literature\, offering profound insights into the nature of humanity and the ethical boundaries of scientific experimentation. \nThe Heart of a Dog is available from Vintage in Michael Glenny’s 1968 translation and from Penguin Classics in Andrew Bromfield’s 2007 version. Bromfield’s is the pacier of the two\, but Glenny has fun with the officialese. \nWe also recommend watching the movie “Собачье сердце” which you can watch it here Heart of a Dog (Собачье сердце) 1988 in English Online (sovietmoviesonline.com) \nWe look forward to reading\, discussing and sharing our passion for Russian literature with you!

DESCRIPTION:Short films are a wonderful way to experience contemporary culture and authentic language – and to get the satisfaction of watching something complete from beginning to end! \n‘I’ve done about 40 of Tatiana’s short film lessons. It’s an extraordinary method: the films have given me a wonderful chance to practise my speaking and listening\, as well as teaching me things about contemporary life in Russia that I could never have got from a textbook.’
