Russian Through Film: «Ирония Судьбы» (on demand)

«Ирония судьбы, или С лёгким паром!» (The Irony of Fate, or Enjoy Your Bath!) is still regularly watched and enjoyed over the New Year period. Join Victoria to find out why it is still so popular! 

The first session will look at excerpts from the film, examine the background and context, and introduce key themes and vocabulary. Between sessions, your task will be to watch the full film. The second session will then give you the chance to discuss what you’ve seen and test how well you have understood it.

The course comprises two 1.5-hour sessions which will be scheduled to suit you and you can participate individually, or as a small group of 2 or 3 friends at the same level.

If you’ve ever wondered whether you’re really ready to watch a film in the original Russian, now is the time to find out! Join Victoria to watch and discuss one of the happiest Russian films  – a 2006 romantic comedy Piter FM.

You’ll find yourself transported to Saint Petersburg at its most magical time of summer –  “white nights” where old buildings can talk to people.

Join Victoria to take a look at the history of World War 2 from the perspective of the USSR based on authentic video materials.  The session lasts 2 hours and can be scheduled to suit you and you can participate individually, or as a small group of 2 or 3 friends at the same level.

Based around short videos and discussion, the session will look at the differences in the way in which the key stages of the war and its aftermath were viewed in the Soviet Union and the West.

Mock tests can be ordered individually, or the written tests can be ordered as a complete set of four tests at a discounted price. The four written tests (grammar/vocabulary; reading; writing; and listening) are done by you independently and returned to us for marking. The mock speaking test is done online via Zoom with a qualified examiner and includes detailed feedback.

Our self-study mini-modules are based around the popular and funny Russian TV series «Ералаш». Add a new component to your language-learning, study at your own pace – and have fun! This module is aimed at students at B1 level – you should know all cases for singular and plural nouns and have a good understanding of verb aspect and verbs of motion (including basic prefixes for them).
