Russian through film: «На Дерибасовской хорошая погода, …»

A fantastic short course for advanced students, based on an authentic Russian film: these two sessions are focussed on the 1992 film На Дерибасовской хорошая погода, или На Брайтон-Бич опять идут дожди. It’s an unusual Russian-American comedy, and the last film directed by Leonid Gaiday. It captured the atmosphere of a time when cooperation between Russia and the West seemed not just possible, but inevitable. The film is full of references to real events and people of the early 1990s and earlier.

The first lesson will look at excerpts from the film, examine the background and context, and introduce key themes and vocabulary.

During the week between lessons, your task will be to watch the film. The second lesson will then give you the chance to discuss what you’ve seen and test how well you have understood it.

You’ll learn new vocabulary, practise your listening comprehension, improve your discussion and analysis skills – and you’ll pick up a wealth of fascinating historical and cultural information.
